My Reading Progress

I’m currently reading Lady of Outlaws by L.A. Boruff. The novel has been on my TBR list for months, yet I’ve been putting it off since its release since I haven’t been in the mood to read a paranormal romance. But, I’m excited to get into it.

I read two books from my Up Next shelf this past week: Thin Girls by Diana Clarke and If I Had Your Face by Frances Cha! Both were character-driven plots and so well written, they were also both debut books for the authors!

I loved the writing of Thin Girls so much that I gave it a 5-star rating! You can read my review here.

My two book reviews of last week were also my two reads from the Up Next shelf. The books explore the toxicity of society’s beauty ideals, specifically the toxicity of diet culture in Thin Girls and plastic surgery in If I Had Your Face, respectively.

Both books explore the mental and emotional trauma that can result from unattainable beauty standards. Interestingly, both novels include emotionally triggering content. Yet, I found Thin Girls easier to read and enjoy, perhaps because I knew when starting the novel that the main character was starting off in a rough place: she has anorexia. In comparison, in the middle of If I Have Your Face, much of the ‘good’ in the main characters’ lives are revealed to be quite hopeless.

Read my review of If I Had Your Face by Frances Cha here.

The Upcoming Week

To Be Read

My TBR for this week is to read How to Get Over a Boy by Chidera Eggerue from my Up Next shelf. Just flipping through the book is enjoyable; the graphics and attention to detail are so visually pleasing. However, I think the best part about this book is that it seeks to address the following questions:

  • Are you fed up with thinking about that guy every minute of every waking hour, when he doesn’t even reply to your texts?
  • Are you reeling from the pain of a break-up, unsure of where to turn?
  • Are you single and looking to be happy with your choice in the face of society’s constant questioning? 🙋🏻‍♀️

To Look Forward To This Week

Happy Canadian Thanksgiving! I hope everyone is having a great day and that you’re able to connect (virtually or in-person) with your friends and family today! I’m so thankful for my bookstagram community and my loved ones who have supported my love of books. 🙃

This week is an exciting week when it comes to releases! Today (October 12th) is the release date of Heart Strings by Melanie Moreland, a contemporary romance novel that I think is the epitome of sweet romance. I reviewed the book two weeks ago and gave it a 4.75-star rating. You can read my review of Heart Strings here.

Heart Strings is now free with your Kindle Unlimited subscription.

The second book releasing this week is The Favor by Suzanne Wright. The novel is releasing on October 13th and is a shift from Suzanne’s paranormal books, which she has been publishing these past few years. I’m really excited to see how Suzanne makes the marriage-for-convenience trope her own, especially since her heroes have a tendency to be super alpha.
