The Weekly Wrap: August 17th to August 23rd

A detailed look at last week’s reading habits: two books read, one from my Up Next shelf and one book DNF’d; three new books I want to read exploring everything from mental illness, sweeping romance and paranormal activity. The weekly wrap also unpacks three books I’m planning on reading this week, in-depth and a reverse harem romance that is releasing this week.

What I’ve Read This Week

I didn’t realize how slow of a reading week it’s been until I compiled the list below! However, I’ve had a few things going on this week which have drawn my attention away from reading. Also, I initially planned to post two book reviews last week but I decided to binge-watch Season 5A of Lucifer instead!

‘Up Next’ Reading Progress

So I’ve re-organized my Up Next list, again. If you’re a follower on my Instagram account, you can see that I’ve accumulated quite a stack of physical books to read. I’ve, therefore, elected to move these books to the top of my reading list.

In last week’s TBR (to-be-read) was the book How To Be An Antiracist by Ibram X. Kendi. I’m currently reading it and so far I’m enjoying it. It’s really well written.

On the topic of my Up Next progress, the book I reviewed this past week, Not So Pure and Simple was on this list. Also, How To Be An Antiracist is also on this list, so once I complete that novel, it’s another book checked off.

The Upcoming Week

To Be Read

The Body Politic by Brian Platzer is a book that I covered in my book haul, which I posted on Friday. I love books that focus on their character development, especially as they react to outside forces. The fact that the novel introduces the reader to the main characters just after 9/11 and catches up to them after the election of Trump. Each character seeks to find their new normal post-9/11… and they achieve it eventually. But, with Trump’s election in 2016, everything starts to spin out again which is echoed in each of the characters’ perspectives. I really can’t wait to dig into The Body Politic, as I find it rare for modern politics to take the front seat in fictional novels, despite the fact that politics is hugely influential in our lives.

Family in Six Tones by Lan Cao and Harlan Margaret Van Cao is a compelling memoir that explores the conflicting identity of being born in another country and immigrating to the U.S. and being a child of an immigrant parent. I’ve recently discovered my interest in memoirs. I love how accessible they can be while conveying emotion and helping a reader understand things they never lived through. I also really like it when books explore the complexity of identity: how much of our identities are social constructions but are also so important to us because it’s also how we see ourselves. I can’t wait to start Family in Six Tones. I was lucky enough to receive an ARC (advanced reader copy) through NetGalley. My thanks to FSB Associates for the opportunity!

21 Things You May Not Know About the Indian Act by Bob Joseph is part of the list of books I’m reading to have a better understanding of how to practice antiracism. If you’ve been reading my Instagram posts and/or my past Weekly Wrap posts, you’ll know how I’m interested in how practicing antiracism fits within Canadian history since many of the current books on antiracism center America. However, this book is about understanding how the Indian Act has detrimentally affected the Indigenous people of Canada. I’m looking forward to reading 21 Things You May Not Know About the Indian Act and understanding how the Canadian legislature must be transformed to ensure Canada is more just and antiracist.

To Look Forward To This Week

I’m so excited for this week! Releasing on August 28th is the fifth book in the Steel Demons MC series, Helpless! It’s one of my favourite RH series and it’s (finally) edging into the paranormal. Also, the last book had a semi-cliffhanger so I’m eager to get some answers.

This week I’m planning on posting two new book reviews. The theme for this week is the individual impact of modern U.S. politics. It also seems like my streak of 4-star reviews is still going strong, although I DNF’d another book this week.

Also, the end of the month is coming soon so I’ve started to look work on my Monthly Wrap. I’ve decided to add a few more statistics and alter how I show them. I also wanted to put out there that if there’s anything you would like me to include please message me on my Contact Me page or send me a DM over Instagram.
