The Weekly Wrap: August 24th to August 30th

A detailed look at last week’s reading habits: four new books read, one DNF, only one book knocked off my lengthy Up Next shelf, three new books I want to read which centre challenging the heteronormative patriarchy and a contemporary romance that’s releasing this week with my favourite hero trope, the grumpy hero.

‘Up Next’ Reading Progress

So, I’ve only completed one book that was from my Up Next shelf (The Body Politic). However, I’m about to finish How To Be Antiracist by Ibram X Kendi (I know, I’m still reading it). I’m also starting 21 Things You May Not Know About the Indian Act by Bob Joseph. I talked about this book in last week’s wrap-up (see here for the details).

I’m also postponing my planned book reviews this week to catch up on my Up Next reading list. There are so many books I want to read. However, lately, it feels like I don’t hit my reading rhythm until Friday which means I’m missing out on a good chunk of reading time. Hopefully, this week’s “reset” allows me to spend some time just reading.

The Upcoming Week

To Be Read

In last week’s weekly wrap I talked about Helpless by Crystal Ash and the ARC I received in exchange for an honest review, Family in Six Tones by Lan Cao and Harlan Margaret Van Cao. I can’t wait to read both!

Searching for Sylvie Lee by Jean Kwok is a book I purchased a while ago! This sentence in the synopsis is what made the book an instant purchase:

“[the book] untangles the complicated ties binding three women—two sisters and their mother—in one Chinese immigrant family and explores what happens when the eldest daughter disappears.

Some of my favourite themes nowadays are the secrets kept within families and the exploration of familial relationships. There’s so much an author can do with these themes. Also, the added mystery of the main character’s sister disappearing suggests the book will keep me on the edge of my seat.

To Look Forward To This Week

Melanie Moreland is one of my favourite romance authors. Her male POV’s are probably some of the most authentic I’ve read. I seriously cannot wait to read Revved to the Maxx; broody, growly heroes (who are really teddy bears) are one of my favourite tropes. Also, I love the relationship dynamic when the Hero is super grumpy and the Heroine is a ray of sunshine–makes for some funny moments.

This week I’m taking some time to catch up on my reading list (it is really long). So instead of promising two book reviews (like I did in the past two weeks) and then only posting one, I’m committing to one book review for sure with maybe another. Also, there’s no theme this week!

I’ve decided to move my monthly wraps the first day of the next month instead of the last day of the month. So, keep a look out for my August Wrap tomorrow!
