My Reading Progress

Get the Book: 🇨🇦

The end of September was so busy I decided to combine two weekly wraps into one post – again! Despite being really busy, I managed to read quite a few books, including two that have been on my Up Next Shelf for quite some time. Most of the books I read were romances under 200 pages that fell more into the ‘insta-love’ category. Whenever I’m feeling stressed, binge reading these kinds of romance novels is the perfect way to relax.

In other news, I read my ARC of The Boss by Melanie Moreland. I love when authors experiment with new genres. The Boss releases on October 14th, so I’ll have my review posted around that time.

I finally read and finished Long Bright River by Liz Moore! I had been wanting to read this book for months, so I finally bumped it to the top of my to-be-read list. It reminded me so much of Kate Winslet’s limited TV series, Mare of Easttown. While there is a mystery underpinning the plot, it was secondary to the main character’s relationships and family struggles. The book is an intimate and character-focused study of the opioid crisis.

I wasn’t ready to say goodbye to Summer, but now that October is here, I find myself in a very festive, Autumnal mood. I’m hoping to prioritize the more spooky books on my to-be-read list this Halloween season.

Up Next Shelf Progress

A reminder: my Up Next Shelf is comprised of all the unread books I want to read and have purchased.

I read two books from my Up Next Shelf: (1) Long Bright River by Liz Moore and (2) The (Un)Popular Vote by Jaspar Sanchez.

I finished The (Un)Popular Vote in under 10 hours, I enjoyed it so much. I loved the casual representation – none of the minority identities felt performative or like the author was trying to be “woke.” And, while many reviews felt the dedication to student government was extra, I didn’t find it completely unrealistic. Anyone heard of Paris Geller? Reviewers have drawn similarities to the Netflix series, The Politician.

The Upcoming Week

To Be Read

Get the Book: 🇨🇦 ~ 🇬🇧 ~ 🇺🇸

Burnout by Emily and Amelia Nagoski has been on my to-be-read list for months. By reading the book now, I’m hoping to nip the academic-related exhaustion I’ll feel come November when all my deadlines hit.

I’m also curious what the book will include. As I mentioned in my review of Harvest of Love, burnout cases have risen as COVID-19 has blurred work-life boundaries. I’m hoping the book includes preventative strategies as well as coping mechanisms.

To Look Forward To This Week

Get the Book: 🇨🇦

So many great books have been released over the past two weeks, including:

  • The Hill We Climb and Other Poems by Amanda Gorman
  • Harvest of Love by M. Moreland
  • Once Upon A Broken Heart by Stephanie Garber
  • Within Obsession and Lies by Stacy Jones and Harper Wylde

However, today (October 4th), one of my highly anticipated romances was released: Knot My Type by Evie Mitchell. It’s an adorable, sexy, opposites attract romance. And, it’s been compared to The Kiss Quotient by Helen Hoang, which is a favourite romance novel of mine!
