A detailed look at last week’s reading habits: Four books read, no DNFs and three of the books are from my Up Next Shelf! I also have a novel tbr inspired by Amy Poehler’s movie: Moxie!

My Reading Progress
While I didn’t read that many books last week, I’m really happy that I’m sticking to my new commitment: reading more books from my Up Next Shelf than new books. I realized that while I really enjoy nonfiction books, I need the upbeat and less serious storytelling of romance novels to keep up my reading momentum.
I was surprised by how much I enjoyed The Christmas Fix by Lucy Score. The Hero comes across as annoying in the beginning (he seems to think supporting his daughter stops at supporting her love of traditionally feminine interests, like fashion, and that if you’re conventionally beautiful – like the Heroine – you’re an airhead). But, I LOVED the Heroine and she made pushing through the Hero’s BS worth it. She was SUCH a boss: producer of her reality TV show, business owner, saved her family business and thrives (and rubs that in peoples’ faces) in the man-dominated industry of construction.
I’m currently reading All Boys Aren’t Blue by George M. Johnson; it is such a captivating memoir and so well written. I already know it’s going to be one of my favourite books of 2021. I’m only 17% into the book but I love how George is taking the time to explore each of his identities: his race, his sexuality and his gender.
Up Next Shelf Progress
A reminder: my Up Next Shelf is comprised of all the unread books I want to read and have purchased.
I read three books from my Up Next Shelf this week: The Midnight Library, The Body Is Not An Apology and The Christmas Fix.
The Midnight Library was a recent purchase; I was in the mood for a character-driven, existential novel so it got pushed to the forefront of my TBR pile. It took me way longer than I wanted to read The Body Is Not An Apology (a month to be exact). I enjoyed it but I was slow to get through it; I’ll expand on the why in my review. Finally, The Christmas Fix has been on my Up Next Shelf for a while but I picked it up on a whim and really liked it.
Despite this awesome dent in my Up Next Shelf, I also added a book! Yesterday I found When They Call You A Terrorist: A Black Lives Matter Memoir by Patrisse Khan-Cullors and Asha Bandele on sale, so it was an instant purchase!
Therefore, this week’s Up Next Shelf progress rating (Read – Bought) is a two.

The Upcoming Week
To Be Read
I watched Amy Poehler’s movie, Moxie, on Netflix this weekend and loved it! A warning though: it features an introduction to intersectional feminism; during the first part of the movie, the main character, Vivian, realizes she’s been complicit in the patriarchy, exhibiting internalized misogyny and perpetuating white feminism (although the movie only names patriarchy and intersectional as keywords). I liked that the movie showcased how feminist movements and organizing are collaborative and should be intersectional. Vivian’s boyfriend, Seth is also so freaking adorable.
In that vein, Rules for Being a Girl has been sitting on my shelf for ages and its premise is similar to Moxie: exploring sexual harassment (but this time by the “cool” teacher 🤢) and the main character starting a feminist movement to fight back. The book demonstrates and explores the many ways society’s norms and values have constrained and diminished girls, and highlights how girls have dissented and fought to be heard.
To Look Forward To This Week
I’m really enjoying not being so attached to Instagram. I’m posting when I want to and when I have the time. I used to think my goal with my Bookstagram account was growth, but I’ve decided that my focus is now more on building a community. I want to follow accounts I’m genuinely interested in and make connections! I also don’t want my content planning to take up so much time that I can’t read as much as I want.
There aren’t any upcoming books on my radar releasing this week. I know that I’ve stated in the past I won’t make promises about upcoming blog posts but I’m hoping to post 1-2 book reviews this week!
