I had a great reading week last week! I read so many romances and caught up on so many of my favourite series. One of which was Finding Unity by Ripley Proserpina; it’s the sixth book in The Searchers series, and I’ve been waiting to read it for ages! You can imagine my face – the shock – when I discovered it released July 2020. I was so happy I could finally read the conclusion to the series but also annoyed it had been out for so long and I didn’t realize. If you’re looking to read a contemporary reverse harem romance I highly recommend The Searchers by Ripley Proserpina. It explores the realities of being in such a relationship and has a romantic suspense sub-plot.
I finally posted my Primaveral Book Haul yesterday; I love talking about all the books I recently purchased. And, there are so many on this list I can’t wait to start reading.
Also, I’ve changed the book website I link my last week’s reads to; instead of Goodreads, they’re linked to The StoryGraph. I like how The StoryGraph includes the book’s characteristics to give tentative readers an idea about what the book is like, separate to the synopsis. The characters included are: plot- or character-driven, strong character development, loveable characters, diverse cast of characters and flaws of characters a main focus?
Up Next Shelf Progress
I’ve been grappling with how I want to keep track of my Up Next Shelf progress. I discovered The StoryGraph allows me to create personal reading challenges; it allowed me to create what amounts to a checklist of the 100+ books I’ve purchased and still need to read. In the following weeks I’ll discuss in this section the books I’ve read from my Up Next Shelf and any additions to the shelf. I’ve also joined another reading challenging on The StoryGraph that is more of a commitment/promise to myself: I want to read more books from my Up Next Shelf than re-reads and “instant” reads (those I purchase and immediately read). The Upcoming Week
To Be Read
The Midnight Library by Matt Haig is one of the books from my Primaveral Book Haul. While I didn’t flag it as my most anticipated read from the Haul, I’m in the mood for a book about books – especially one that includes a magical library. The book explores mental health (definitely read the trigger warnings before reading) and is character-driven (which is my favourite type of plot). I also haven’t read a physical book in a while. That being said I still am working my way through:
- Memory Serves by Lee Maracle
- The Body Is Not An Apology by Sonya Renee Taylor
I have enough time this week that I’m hoping to finish these books. But, while I love creating aspirational to-be-read lists, I rarely stick to them 😅.
To Look Forward To This Week
There are two great books coming out this week! One has been on my Upcoming Releases list for ages: The Dating Plan by Sara Desai which I talked about in my February Wrap. The romance includes two of my favourite romance tropes: fake dating and marriage of convenience. It also dabbles in the second-chance romance trope. I think I’m going to love the Heroine.
The other upcoming release is a recent discovery: Firekeeper’s Daughter by Angeline Boulley. It’s a young adult mystery thriller “about a Native teen who must root out the corruption in her community.” It sounds like it’s character-driven which I love, and I also really enjoy YA coming of age books, which Firekeeper’s Daughter appears to be (although, with a mystery bent).
I’ve realized I typically make grand proclamations about my posting plans for the upcoming week but this year I almost always end up having to alter or postpone them. Therefore, I’ve decided to stop saying I’m going to review X this week – I will review The Vanishing Half, for example, but not this week. Life is really busy, and it’s going to get even busier soon, so I need to give myself some breathing room with my posting schedule.
