May Reflection and Into June

My May Wrap Up is yet another Monthly Wrap posted at the end of the following month instead of the beginning 😅. I think I will have to suck it up and post my June Wrap a week or two after this post to break the cycle. Also, as you’ll see later on, there’s no summary of my reviews because I didn’t post any book reviews in May 🤯.

Interestingly, all my 5-stars books in May were re-reads, as well as a majority of my 4-star reads:

  • 3 of 4 of my 4.5-stars were re-reads,
  • all 3 of my 4.25-stars were re-reads, and
  • 5 of 10 of my 4-stars were re-reads.

The remaining (12) books – 3.75-stars and below – were all new reads. Hence, why I’m calling May 2021 the “month of re-reads.” Even though my re-reads weren’t half of the books I read in May (13 of 31), May has the most books in the re-read category in 2021. And, of the 19 books, I rated 4-stars and above, 13 were re-reads – so every single re-read was rated 4-stars or above. Considering how comforting I find re-reads and the pace of change (and stress) I was experiencing in May, it makes sense I re-read so many books.

Only one book I read in May was from my Up Nex Shelf. I’m proud to report I read two of my three books on my minimum to-be-read list: Memory Serves by Lee Maracle and The Lost Apothecary by Sarah Penner.

My June Hopefuls

As I mentioned earlier, I finished two of my three May Hopefuls; I’m still reading Bad Feminist by Roxane Gay. My June Hopefuls comprises three novellas: Between the World and Me by Ta-Nehisi Coates, I Hate Men by Pauline Harmange and Ring Shout by P. Djeli Clark. I’m like how this selection of books to read includes nonfiction, feminism, anti-racism and historical fantasy.
