The Weekly Wrap: January 11th to January 17th

T

A detailed look at last week’s reading habits: three books read (one from my Up Next shelf), three new books I want to read, including a sweet-AF high school romance, a nonfiction novel analyzing the USA empire from a non-US centric perspective and a memoir on being a Black man in the US that also unpacks masculinity, and all the books releasing this week – there are SEVEN!

My Reading Progress

Get the book: πŸ‡¨πŸ‡¦

I’ve been swamped this week, and, as a result, I read only three books. However, I’m pleased with the books I read. I especially enjoyed When She’s Bold by Ruby Dixon. It uses two of my favourite tropes: the confident and assertive Heroine and the super shy Hero. The romance was so freaking cute! However, there was something in the epilogue that threw me off (you can read my review here), which dampened my enjoyment a bit.

Up Next Shelf Progress

A reminder: my Up Next Shelf is comprised of all the unread books I want to read and have purchased.

The total number of books on my Up Next Shelf has increased from 92 to 94 books. I added 4 books to the shelf last week and read one book from the Up Next shelf.

Net Progress = Books Added – Books Read

My Net Progress has increased to 1 book since I added more books than I read. Look at the above equation to see why my Net Progress was negative during the week of January 4th to January 10th.

The Upcoming Week

To Be Read

I have around two weeks to finish all the books I want to read by February! You can head to my new 2021 Reading Updates page to see the details (click here). On this page, you can also find the reading challenges I’m participating in.

I wanted to mention my current read Memory Serves by Lee Maracle. I’m reading the book for my uni course and am finding it very interesting. Maracle’s book is a collection of her oratories and captures the profundity of storytelling. Her book also illustrates the orality of Indigenous peoples’ history; their nonfiction accounts are documented through their experiences, which are shared orally.

To Look Forward To This Week

This week is so exciting; there are so many books releases this week!

I decided to feature I Hate Men by Pauline Harmange because it’s a feminist book (with an obviously incendiary title) that people were trying to get banned in its country of origin, France. I’m excited to see if the book is more nuanced than its title suggests.

The remaining books on my Upcoming Release list that are being published this week are:

  • Rise of the Red Hand by Olivia Chadha ~ young adult dystopian
  • Monsters by K.N. Banet ~ adult urban fantasy
  • We Free the Stars by Hafsah Faizal ~ young adult high fantasy
  • Enjoy the View by Sarah Morgenthaler ~ contemporary romance
  • Shipped by Angie Hockman ~ contemporary romance
  • Throne of Power by Rina Kent ~ dark mafia romance
