A detailed look at last week’s reading habits: two books read (both from my Up Next shelf), three new books I want to read, including a nonfiction novel that delineates the LGBT+ world-wide rights movement and analyzes its impact, a moving fictional story that explores familial relationships and the desire to belong and an entertaining nonfiction book about the highs and lows of dating, and one new book releasing this week!

My Reading Progress

I finally started and finished The Vanishing Half by Brit Bennett! And, like I assumed, I loved it. My friend and I attempted another #BuddyRead, which was chaotic as usual but was still fun – I like reading a book and being able to vent to someone who knows exactly what’s happening.

I’m going to write a comprehensive review later in February, but if you’re looking for a book to read, go read The Vanishing Half!

Yesterday I received an advanced reader copy (ARC) of My Saving Grace by Melanie Moreland. I inhaled the book this morning, finishing it within a few hours. I’m going to post my review later this week, but I thought I’d mention some preliminary thoughts.

I loved how Grace (the Heroine) was the main POV. While Jaxson (the Hero) also had several chapters, I thought Grace’s character development and voice were so strong in My Saving Grace.

I have a few complaints about the reasons for Grace and Jaxon’s problems and their resolution. I still gave the book 4-stars because it was so well written, and Grace was an awesome Heroine.

My Up Next Shelf

A reminder: my Up Next Shelf is comprised of all the unread books I want to read and have purchased.

The total number of books on my Up Next Shelf stayed the same at 93 books. My books read increased to 7 books.

Net Progress = Books Added – Books Read

I added two books to my Up Next shelf last week: The Skin We’re In by Desmond Cole and The Body Is Not an Apology by Sonya Renee Taylor.

I’ve owned The Skin We’re In for a while but missed it when I was updating my Up Next shelf πŸ™ˆ.

The two books I read last week were from my Up Next shelf, so my ‘additions’ and ‘subtractions’ balance each other out. However, overall, I’m still adding more books than reading, which I think is just a symptom of being a bookworm.

The Upcoming Week

To Be Read

I really hoped I was going to finish Crooked Kingdom in January. My mandatory school reading took precedence, and finding my rhythm now that I’m back at school has also taken a minute. So, this week I will be finishing Crooked Kingdom.

February is also the start of Black History month! I have a backlog of so many books purchased and waiting to be read, and this month I’m prioritizing all my books by Black authors. If you visit my 2021 Reading Updates, you can see that diversifying my books read is my number one priority in 2021. I’m also thinking of posting a list of all the books I’m planning on reading this month πŸ€”.

To Look Forward To This Week

I’m so excited that Do Better by Rachel Ricketts is out tomorrow! I’ve followed her on Instagram (click here) for a while and enjoy her honesty and the work she does as a spiritual, racial justice educator. I highly recommend going to her Instagram and looking at her “Read FIRST” highlight.

I’ve already mentioned quite a few upcoming posts for this week and February. However, I also want to note my January Wrap will be posted on Wednesday. I’ve realized I need an extra day to do the statistical analysis – I really enjoy seeing the data but doing it correctly means no rushing!
