14 New Books: My October Book Haul

1

My October Book Haul includes both my hardcopy and ebook purchases I’ve made since my September book haul (click here to see). The haul totals to 14 books (including ebooks), and every book, except for two, is a book I’ve wanted to read for months! Despite October being a month dedicated to spooky reads, I’ve never been much of a mystery/thriller fan. However, I’m broadening my typical reading genres by including a mystery in this haul!

Overview

Buying books has been one of the ways I’ve been cheering myself up this month, and I’m so happy to say that I’ve purchased quite a few long-anticipated books this month. I’ve also picked up quite a few books that I think will become long-time favourites, so I’m really excited to start reading!

To break down this haul, here are a few standouts:

Most Anticipated? You’re the Only One I’ve Told: The Stories Behind Abortions by Dr. Meera Shah has been on my reading list since the summer, and I’ve only recently been able to purchase it. I’m really excited to see how the medical memoir navigates and humanizes the complicated and highly politicized topic of abortion.

Longest Book? From Blood and Ash by Jennifer L. Armentrout at 634 pages
Shortest Book? The Fire Next Time by James Baldwin at 106 pages

After discussing this haul’s themes below, I split the haul into three stacks. One stack is comprised of my new (unread) ebooks from October, and the remaining two stacks are divided by colour. The haul comes to a total of 14 books!

Prevalent Themes

πŸŽƒ Epic fantasy (including detailed world-building and magic)
πŸŽƒ Feminism (exploring two very important topics: abortion and toxic masculinity)
πŸŽƒ Stories of immigrants in America (both stories navigate mental health)
πŸŽƒ Memoirs
πŸŽƒ Character-driven (my favourite type of plot)
πŸŽƒ Nonfiction
πŸŽƒ Strong Female Main Characters (typically a must for me!)

Summary

My October haul has a wide range of genres, which I like–gives me some options since my reading mood is constantly in flux. However, I love that my sub-genres are consistent, even across genres like fiction and nonfiction: character-driven plots are always a favourite of mine, for example. Any book that addresses social justice issues (from feminism to racial politics to mental illness) tends to be a hit with me.

There are also a few books that aren’t included in this haul because I’ve already read them. Some of them I’ve reviewed on this blog (πŸ€“) or Goodreads (πŸ“Œ), you can see below:

πŸ“Œ Secrets of a Summer Night by Lisa Kleypas
πŸ“Œ Someone to Watch Over Me by Lisa Kleypas
πŸ€“ Dear Emmie Blue by Lia Louis

To Look Forward To

I actually forgot about my plan to do a once-a-month book haul until I went a bit wild and bought a bunch of books yesterday. I was then reminded I had a book haul that was due soon, so I decided to post it this week–today, in fact!

I’m still planning on posting a book review later this week, so keep an eye out for my next post. I can’t believe November is in less than two weeks, but the deadline for my monthly wrap is making me think of the books I–at minimum–want to read in October. I thought it would be fun to include a list of my hopefuls for the remainder of October:

πŸ•Έ How to Be An Antiracist by Ibram X. Kendi (I’m still working my way through it, slowly.)
πŸ•Έ Lady of Outlaws by L.A. Boruff (Another book I’m still reading.)
πŸ•Έ Dear Edward by Ann Napolitano
πŸ•Έ Gluttony by Katie May
πŸ•Έ Roaring by Katie May
πŸ•Έ Faked by Karla Sorensen
