My Reading Progress

Get the Book: 🇨🇦 ~ 🇬🇧 ~ 🇺🇸

Last week was incredibly chaotic but I compensated for it by reading so many great books. I also posted my long overdue August Wrap Up. I read 26 books and my favourite read of the month was actually an advance-reader review, Age of Ava by Melanie Moreland.

One of the books I read has been on my Up Next Shelf since May: Ring Shout by P. Djèlí Clark. It was actually my first horror read! While it wasn’t super scary, I found Ring Shout very creepy; which makes sense, considering its specific genre is body horror. I loved the Heroine, Maryse and her magical sword. For such a short book, P. Djèlí Clark shows incredible skill in constructing relatable, empathetic characters.

How Sweet It Is by Dylan Newton was the opposites-attract romance novel I wish Beach Read was. It has a similar set-up where the Hero is a horror writer. But instead of the Heroine being a romance writer, she’s an event planner who specializes in weddings. Meeting the Heroine also inspires the Hero to write his first romance novel! It’s such a funny and sweet contemporary romance. And, the book features Halloween, so it’s a perfect Autumnal read.

I also made it over the 300 books read threshold last week! Only around 60 to go to meet my Goodreads goal.

The Upcoming Week

To Be Read

Between the World and Me by Ta-Nehisi Coates was part of my June minimum to-be-read list, and it’s still unread. So, I’m making it a priority since I’ve been gravitating to nonfiction books recently.

I’ve been wondering who might fill the intellectual void that plagued me after James Baldwin died. Clearly it is Ta-Nehisi Coates. The language of Between the World and Me, like Coates’s journey, is visceral, eloquent, and beautifully redemptive. And its examination of the hazards and hopes of black male life is as profound as it is revelatory. This is required reading.

To Look Forward To This Week

Bad Girls Never Say Die by Jennifer Mathieu is a gender-reversed retelling of The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton set in 1964 Texas. I’m so incredibly excited to see how Mathieu is going to tell this story from a feminist perspective. I’m also looking forward to the plot which explores gender-based violence.

This week I’m hoping to post my review of The Boss by Melanie Moreland. And before the month is over I’m going to post my September Wrap Up, making me finally caught up on my monthly wrap posts.
