May Reflection and Into June

May was another stressful month! The end-of-semester essays put me into immediate burnout. However, the high stress meant I read many books to escape. 😅

I discovered historical romance author Amanda Quick in May! Her books are why I bought so many books this month (14). I’m proud to report that only four books from that haul are still unread as I write this in July. I’m trying to get better at reading the books I buy, but it’s still a work in progress.

May was also the month that I completed my first reading journal! I use the Notebook Therapy A5 notebooks, which are 176 pages. I love journaling about each of the books I’ve read. I’ve become much more aware of why I give books certain ratings, which a self-reflexivity reviewer should have. I’m hoping my second journal will last until the end of December since it doesn’t have as many year-long challenges sketched out at the beginning.

June is another busy month. However, because I (think I) thrive when I have lots going on, I decided to join two month-long challenges: the Pride-a-thon and the Massive Read-a-thon: All Roads Lead to Terresan. If you’re interested in a more detailed discussion of the Massive Read-a-thon, you can read about my reading plan here. My June Hopefuls section below will discuss some of the books for these challenges.

My June Hopefuls

My June Hopefuls include books from my Up Next shelf that I’m planning to read for various reading challenges. I purchased All These Bodies by Kendare Blake specifically for the Buzzword Reading Challenge. I don’t think I’ve ever read a historical mystery/thriller, so I’m excited to determine whether I enjoy the setting. I’m finally getting around to reading The Death of Vivek Oji by Akwaeke Emezi! I’ve been in the mood for more emotional reads lately.

I also decided to join the Massive Readathon: All Roads Lead to Terrasen! Two of the prompts correspond perfectly with books from my Up Next Shelf. Half Sick of Shadows by Laura Sebastian has “shadow” in the title; it’s a feminist Arthurian retelling. I can’t wait to see how the author centres women’s experiences in this incredibly androcentric tale. Lastly, I want to read The Shadow of the Gods by John Gwynne to fulfil the “dragons” prompt. I’m so happy that I’m finally in the mood to read high fantasy again after months of not really feeling the genre!

Since I’m participating in so many challenges this month, I’ve decided I’ll be mood reading my monthly goals of reading a non-fiction book and a 500+ page book.
