A detailed look at last week’s reading habits: four new books read (one from my Up Next shelf), three new books I want to read featuring diverse mythological retellings and central themes of social justice, and some thoughts on my upcoming posts.

My Reading Progress
Get the Book: 🇨🇦
I hit a bit of a reading slump mid-week, so I did the trusty slump-fix and re-read a book: Highball Rush by Claire Kingsley. If you like contemporary small-town romances, I highly recommend the Bootleg Springs series. There are six books in the series, with each book focusing on a new couple in the town; however, there is a shared mystery that links each book, so I wouldn’t call them standalone romances.
I finished one book from my Up Next shelf, Untamed by Glennon Doyle, which also counts towards my Nonfiction November total (only two so far)!
I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed Untamed by Glennon Doyle (read my review here). While the book is a memoir, Glennon did an exceptional job making all of her short essays extremely relatable. Her themes of Knowing, Feeling and Imagination also made the book a much more cathartic read than I was expecting.
The first book I reviewed last week was How To Get Over A Boy by Chidera Eggerue (see my review here). The how-to book was enjoyable to read and made quite a few unique and fascinating points. I really enjoyed how Chidera flipped the ‘getting over a boy’ trope to unpacking how the patriarchy influences romantic relationships.
The past two reviews’ theme was challenging “conventional” relationships (the expectations of women in heterosexual relationships and the fact that people who identify as gay or lesbian still have to come out). Both books unpack how everyone internalizes oppressive norms (racism, sexism, misogyny, bigotry); self-growth is only possible once we are truly honest about ourselves and our relationships. Only then can we live a life of self-actualization.

The Upcoming Week
To Be Read
The past week has been so busy, so I haven’t had as much time to read as I thought. As a result, I’m still catching up on my TBR list from last week! So, my still-to-be-read are as follows:
- How to Be An Antiracist by Ibram X. Kendi
- Crooked Kingdom by Leigh Bardugo
- Sorcery of Thorns by Margaret Rogerson
- Seven Ways to Kill A King by Melissa Wright
I’ve decided not to add any new books to the list because I want to finish them first. So, my TBR update is quite short this week!
To Look Forward To This Week
Pre-order the Book: 🇨🇦
Nine days until the sixth book in the Age of the Andinna series releases!
I’m planning on posting two book reviews this week with the shared theme of learning to love again after a broken heart. I’m not one to read very angsty or sad books, but I’m glad I pushed myself outside my comfort zone. Both books were tear-jerkers and were 100% character-driven, which made the endings all the more satisfying, I think.
I’m also toying with writing some recommendation posts. I’m constantly looking for new books to read, and many of my favourites had been published for years before I discovered them. If you have any posts (recommendation or otherwise) you’d like to see, please send me a note through my Contact Me form (click here).
Question-of-the-day: What are you planning on reading this week?
