2022 Wrap Up: 450 books read

2

Summary: I read 450 books in 2022, surpassing my reading goal! In my 2022 Wrap Up, I break down my reading habits, including my favourite reads and my plans for 2023!

Overview

Another year wrapped! 2022 was overall a pretty good reading year for me. I read over 60 more books in 2022 compared to 2021 while managing to surpass my pages goal of 100,000 pages. Consequently, my average book length was over 300 pages, which is a first for me! I typically read shorter books, but in 2022 I rediscovered my love of middle to longer-length books that allowed me to explore the depth of the characters and world. My average rating is 3.9 stars, which shows that I read quite a few great books, as demonstrated by the fact that 89 of the books I’ve read were 5-star.

Part of why I read so much is because 2022 was a stressful year. I had my graduate research paper due in the summer and lots of travelling obligations at the start and end of the summer as well. Plus, I started a new degree in the fall, continuing my never-ending graduate school journey 😅. While being a stress-reader is horrible for procrastination, it’s great for surpassing reading goals.

However, I also relied on my reading challenges a lot in 2022, specifically @book.club.bitches seasonal BINGO challenges, @CompletelyMelanie’s TBR Knockout challenge and @BooksandLala’s Buzzword Reading Challenge to meet my reading goals. The StoryGraph was instrumental in keeping me on track and helping me plan my to-be-read lists for each challenge.

Similar to my 2021 and 2020 Wrap-Ups, I deconstruct my Goodreads data into quite a few graphs that look at the kinds of books I read, how I read them, the authors they were written by and my ratings. I’m happy that my Up Next Progress (where I read books I’ve already purchased) trended upward from July to December. A major goal in 2023 is to read most of my physical and kindle TBRs. I also list my favourite reads of each month and identify my Top 3 Reads of 2022. I’ll get into some of my reading plans for 2023 at the end of this post!

My Favourites

Of Each Month

My Top 3 of 2022

Writers & Lovers by Lily King

My favourite book of 2022 was Writer & Lovers! This is partly because I had no expectations going into this book and finished it blown away. I adored how the author used a love triangle to explore the main character’s writing career/ambitions and the treatment of women in predominately male art circles.

Half Sick of Shadows by Laura Sebastian

I love feminist retellings, so I was confident I would like this book. But I wasn’t expecting it to make my Top 3 of 2022! The most impressive aspect of this book was how the author revitalized the well-known Arthurian legend by playing with perspective and employing a dual perspective. The writing was also gorgeous.

Four Hundred Souls Edited by Ibram X. Kendi and Keisha N. Blain

This anthology was incredibly impactful. It demonstrated the depth and breadth of racism over the course of 400 hundred years and the lasting impact of slavery in the present day. I appreciated how each chapter focused on not as well-known figures in Black USA history.

Books I Didn’t Get To

There were a few books that I wanted to read and never got around to in 2022. However, there were also quite a few books that I started and didn’t finish, but I still want to read them in 2023. Check out my End of Year Book Tag to see what books I’ll prioritize in 2023!

Goodbye 2022 and Into 2023

As I approached the end of 2022, I managed to increase the number of books read from my Up Next Shelf each month! Like every year, reading the books I own is a priority, but in 2023 I’m putting in place rules to support this goal.

While I had a good reading year in 2022, my engagement on my blog and Instagram was inconsistent. I stopped posting my Weekly Wraps because they were too much of a commitment and had to be made on such short notice since they summarized my previous week’s reading habits. Overall, I wrote 25 blog posts in 2023, which is 55 fewer than last year 🙈. Consequently, my #1 blogging goal for 2023 is to become more consistent with my content.

Stay tuned for a post about the challenges I’m participating in this new year and a review of how I did on my 2022 goals & challenges.

Happy New Year, everyone!
