All readers have their guilty pleasures, and for me, books with simple clichéd plots are the kind of books I feel like reading when I’m in a certain mood. Upon reading the synopsis of Tempting the Crown, I’m immediately thinking a hot quick read with a guaranteed HEA: this is the book for me! However, this book turned out to be much more than a simple “virgin-for-auction” romance… especially since the heroine is not a virgin.
Paige does a good job balancing the plot–the hero is a king, after all, who is “dating” an American commoner–with the more salacious parts of the story. And while most people buying Tempting the Crown are interested in the ahem romance of the story, it never hurts when the dynamics between the hero and heroine emulate a semi-realistic relationship, especially between two completely different castes.
The hero and heroine’s relationship was quite hot, but Paige did not go down the cliched route when describing why her heroine was auctioning herself off for one night. How many of you have read a book with this plot where the heroine is a virgin and desperately needs money to save an ailing family member? For the heroine… this was about the once in the lifetime experience of having one night stand with royalty, a movie star, famous model, etc. and it just so happens that her tryst was with the king of the country.
I also appreciated how the reader was given an insight into the hero’s POV so we could see that being King wasn’t as glamorous as we were lead to believe in the synopsis. To be honest, the hero comes across as quite arrogant in the synopsis. While that arrogance does exist in the actual story, it has more to do with his “job” and being used to everyone just doing what he says rather than being rudely expectant.
Tempting the Crown, while maybe not to the standards of some, is definitely a book of more substance than I initially thought upon purchase. It’s a quick hot read and lends a sense of realism as a normal girl comes to terms with dating a King and what that means for her and her own career.
